Engineering biological systems that remediate, monitor, and restore natural environments.
Environmental biology gives us two things at once: material and information. Our environment programme converts underutilised and invasive biomass into functional materials, and instruments those materials so they report on the conditions they are placed in. The result is a product line where the environmental argument and the performance argument are the same argument.
Aquatic biomass converted into programmable hydrogel materials. Seaweed-derived alginate supplies a reinforced double-network matrix; an invasive macrophyte supplies a ROS-modulating extract. Biopatch is the first product built on the platform, pairing that matrix with an integrated strain-sensing layer.
Biopatch ↗Metabolic pathways drawn from our biodiversity collection for the conversion of waste and non-arable feedstocks into liquid fuels and precursors. Strain and pathway selection is in progress.
